Fencing Beginner's Clinic!

Saturday, February 25, 2012

9:00am-6:00pm

*********************************

This is a one-day clinic that will expose you to the basics of the sport.  It is intended to give new members the basic skills they need to begin participation with the club.  It is also a great way for born-again fencers to get back in after a long hiatus!

We will take a lunch break during the day and members must plan for lunch on their own.  You may bring a lunch and stay in the training room if you wish.

IMPORTANT!!!

Please send an e-mail to Matt at mattvann@suddenlink.net to reserve a space in the class.  There has been a lot of recent interest for this clinic!

*********************************

What to bring:

1.  At least one gallon of water.  Small coolers are permitted.

2.  Snacks: Powerbars, fruit, etc.  There will be plenty of breaks.

3.  Wear cool, comfortable workout clothing.  Shorts are permitted in this class.  Athletic shoes are REQUIRED!  It is not recommended to wear jeans. If they sag, expect an atomic power wedgie from the coach as you're tossed out the door.  You should be able to take a GIANT step in whatever shorts/pants you wear.

4.  Bring a headband, head wrap or something to keep the sweat out of your eyes while wearing a fencing mask.

5.  If you have long hair, braid it up or securely tie it back.  It is illegal to have hair covering  your jacket in fencing.  You might as well get used to it from the start!

6.  If you wear glasses you may need a strap to keep them in place.

7.  A towel is always nice to have.

8.  BRING ALL 3 PAGES OF THE COMPLETED MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION!  Click here to download it.

What to expect:

The purpose of this class is to give you enough fencing basics to be able to attend regular club practices and train with other fencers.  Fencing takes years to master and some argue that it can never be mastered.  The more you train, the better you fence.

You should be capable of playing racquet sports or basketball.  Don't worry about being too out of shape.  If you get tired, you can sit down and rest.  We'll spend a lot of time warming up, stretching and cooling down.  The class is a mix of discussion, demonstration and hands-on.

You're expected to work with other students as a team to accomplish a goal: learn as much as possible about fencing!  Young fencers should be able to train comfortably with adults.

If you wish to train for the class, stretching is the most important activity at this point.  Concentrate on all of the muscle groups in the legs!  Warm up before stretching and stretch again after cool-down.  Speed rope, walking, running or any cardio will be helpful

Hit our links page and do some surfing.  You'll be ahead of the game.

These forms must be completed and brought with you to participate!
